Michael Maloney for Nassau County Legislature
Michael Maloney, a nearly life-long resident of Garden City, NY, is seeking to represent District 14 on the Nassau County Legislature. With more than 70,000 residents, District 14 encompasses all of Garden City, Garden City South, Carle Place and portions of Hempstead, West Hempstead, Westbury, Old Westbury, Jericho, Hicksville, and Bethpage.
Having been an independent, unaffiliated voter since the age of 18, Maloney is running for elected office for the first time on the Democratic Party and Working Families Party lines in an effort to improve government so that it's more responsive, transparent and accountable to the electorate. Working families are under tremendous strain to make ends meet and provide a better life for themselves and their children. Seniors and others on fixed incomes are finding it harder to remain in their homes due to rising taxes and cost of living expenses. Government inefficiency and political corruption are major roadblocks to improving the lives of Nassau County residents.
As Nassau County tries to climb its way back from near fiscal catastrophe, every budget decision will require intense scrutiny. Maloney will prioritize proposals that favor long-term fiscal responsibility over short-term fixes. He will champion programs that can show positive, measurable results over ones that are less accountable. And he will always favor activities that proactively invest in the health, education, and economic stability of children, families, seniors and veterans over programs that reactively address the negative consequences of not doing so.
A former journalist turned public relations professional, Maloney has demonstrated success in business-to-business communications for information technology companies such as IBM, Canon, Sun Microsystems, Sharp Electronics and Protegrity. Prior to his career in public relations, Maloney served as editor for several trade magazines and hometown newspapers on Long Island, including the Garden City Life, Farmingdale Observer and Massapequan Observer.
Born in Brooklyn, Maloney moved to Garden City when he was 7 years old. He attended Homestead and Stratford elementary schools, Garden City Junior High School, and Garden City High School (Class of 1987). Husband of Allison (GCHS Class of 1988) and father of Kathryn (GCHS Class of 2023), Maloney is an active member of his community. He served seven seasons as volunteer coach with the Centennial Soccer Club and six years as a director and newsletter editor for the Eastern Property Owners Association. He currently volunteers with the Garden City Association of Girl Scouts serving as coordinator of the annual Election Day Bowling & Ice Skating events.
For nearly 20 years Maloney also managed communications for an annual golf outing that raised approximately $800,000 for HelpHOPELive (formerly National Transplant Assistance Fund) for the benefit of a young woman (and daughter of Maloney’s college friend) who has undergone two kidney transplants.
